History of Haig Point

a name for the ages. 

Haig Point’s history dates back almost 400 years, to 1735 when George Haig I purchased 500 acres on Daufuskie Island. Following his death, Haig Point was left to George Haig III in 1790. In 1810, Haig sold the land to the Mongin family. Between 1810 and 1823, the Mongins acquired the 600-acre Freeport Plantation. This created the nearly 1,100-acre plantation now known as Haig Point.

Over the next 124 years, the property was sold to several families in the area. Drawing this chapter of Haig Point history to a close, Charles Cauthen and Daufuskie Island Land Trust bought Haig Point, the Webb Tract and Oak Ridge in the late 1950s.

In 1984, International Paper bought Haig Point. Two years later, International Paper set up extensive infrastructure, restored the lighthouse and hired Rees Jones to build the initial golf course. Also at this time, the Strachan Mansion was moved from St. Simons Island, Georgia to Haig Point.

In 2001, International Paper transferred all of the common property and amenities to the members of Haig Point. The golf course and other amenities were operated on behalf of the HPCCA by Troon Golf until the end of 2008. Since 2009, Haig Point is member-operated under the traditional model of a private club.

While it has been over 300 years since the Haig family has been part of the community, the name remains the foundation of its beginnings--the perfect home for families to enjoy the best life has to offer.
